Before you try and sell anything to anybody at any time, CONNECT first! Human beings are wired to need, and indeed thrive, on connection. It builds trust, allows you to get to know your prospective customer or client, and you become a human being sharing with another human being. The best salespeople never short-circuit or shorten this crucial part of the relationship building. One little tip: be genuinely interested in the other person and it will shine through. Once the connection is made, selling becomes personal and not impersonal! Cool or what!
